Acer buergerianum
The Trident Maple doesn't deal in compromises — it gives generously, but rewards those who work it.
What makes it unique. Acer buergerianum takes its name from its three-lobed, trident-shaped leaves — small, elegant, turning in autumn from golden yellow to vivid orange and deep red depending on the individual. But its true signature is its nebari: few species develop surface roots as spectacular, as even, and as rapidly. Paired with vigorous growth, an excellent response to repeated pruning, and remarkable tolerance to severe repotting, the Trident Maple is one of the most complete species for bonsai practice.
Origin. Native to eastern China — Shandong, Jiangsu, Zhejiang provinces — and naturalised in Japan and Korea, Acer buergerianum grows naturally in mixed forests at low to mid altitude. In China it has been used in gardens and penjing for centuries. Its adaptation to cold winters and hot, humid summers gives it uncommon robustness among maples.
An accessible and evolving bonsai. Strictly outdoor, the Trident Maple is one of the most recommended choices for beginners approaching deciduous species: more robust than Acer palmatum, more tolerant of watering and pruning errors, and vigorous enough to make progress quickly visible. Its long-term potential — exceptional nebari, fine ramification, spectacular autumn colour — also makes it a lifelong companion for the committed practitioner.
